Our Net Controller group operates under the EOK / NWAR SKYWARN umbrella and welcomes individuals who want to contribute! EOK / NWAR Net controllers staff the HAM desk at the NWS office in Tulsa and work next to the meteorologists who issue warnings. The net controller's primary job is to relay severe weather reports from the field to the meteorologists and provide information such as NWS warnings and updates on storms back to the field. We usually operate with 2 to 3 individuals with a primary controller for both the UHF and VHF systems and a person who logs incoming reports. The positions frequently rotate during events so that everyone gets training in all the functions required. The following procedural documents are available regarding our nets: EOK / NWAR SKYWARN Net Startup/Shutdown Protocol posted 1/13/2002 Net Control General Info / Points to Remember etc... posted 1/13/2002 Net Control Training: The NWS Tulsa has put together some basic training modules to assist Volunteer Net Controllers in the National Weather Service of Tulsa's County Warning Area (NSW Tulsa CWA). The modules are designed to provide a base level of competency with respect to issues common to severe weather events at the NWS Tulsa Office. Successful completion of these modules should help a volunteer achieve adequate performance of targeted Net Control functionality and are being used to assure present volunteers are meeting desired standards. Modules will eventually include Geography, Meteorology, Radio, Radar, Software, and of course Storm Spotting! All modules are intended to be helpful! They are being provided by NWS Tulsa, at the request of the Eastern OK / Northwestern AR SKYWARN Advisory Committee. Here are the current available and proposed modules: (Some require you to download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader).
